Local Events and Fiestas

It was fiesta time in Corralejo this week, where the Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the patroness of the town, was honoured in traditional fashion.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a title given to Mary, the mother of Jesus, in honour of her having given the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to Saint Simon Stock. Her feast is celebrated on July 16. Her followers, the Carmelites are given her special protection.

In Corralejo, she is honoured to protest fishermen and part of the festivities include her statue being carried through the streets to the small wharf. She is then placed on a boat and the procession continues on the water. The locals take great pride in decking their boats with flowers in her honour.

Being Spanish there has to be merrymaking too, and most of the boats play music very loudly. This can be somewhat confusing to the ears, but typical of the Spanish zest for life. There was also a great fireworks display on the Friday night to round off the celebrations.

Val French, from AVM Kitchens was at the procession and took these photographs for us. many thanks Val.
