Washington pet shop owners take staff to Canary Islands for Christmas bonus

Staff at J&M Pets Store in Washington are being thanked for their hard work with a trip to Fuerteventura - As Christmas bonuses go, it is hard to beat: a week’s free holiday on a sun-drenched island.

But that is what the owners of one business in the North East are providing for their small workforce after deciding they had to reward them for their role in the company’s success.

Amanda and Michael Burn, who own J&M Pet Store in Washington , have decided to reward two members of staff by taking them on a seven-day holiday to Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands.

Mrs Burns said: “The two girls are the most important girls in the shop and one of them has never been on holiday. They both come from not very privileged backgrounds but they work really hard.

“The two we are taking are hard working. Me and my husband can now take time off work, which we have never been able to do before.

“We are going all inclusive so they won’t need to pay for anything. We thought it would be better than just giving them £100 as a bonus.”

J&M Pet Beds, which has been in business for more than 30 years, manufactures a range of beds for dogs. Following the success of the business, J&M opened a pet shop at the front of its warehouse, which sells a range of toys, collars, and foods for pets.

Since it opened the pet shop has become a hub for the local community due to the friendly attitude of the team who work there.

Mrs Burns added: “I think that everyone who comes to the shop are our friends. I think that is why we are successful, because people come in for a laugh.”

The store will be closed from January 18-26 while Casey Brotherston and Jessica Campbell join Mr and Mrs Burns in the Canary Islands.
