EU daylight saving time row ESCALATES

THE CANARY Islands have hit out at proposed EU plans to scrap daylight saving time, saying “in no case” should the islands have the same time zone as the Spanish mainland.

Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, said the archipelago, located off the west coast of Africa, should “in no case” have the same time zone as the mainland.

The Canary Island Government revealed their initial evaluation of the repercussions of a change of time zone in the region.

Mr Clavijo said the Autonomous Community plans urged the Spanish Government to take into account their views before making a decision on that matter.

He said: “We are going to ask the Government of Spain, which has created a committee of experts, for the Canary Islands to be present in it since we are the only autonomous community that has a different time to the peninsula.”
