Alternative Therapies

The College of Physicians of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria this week raised their concerns about alternative therapies that could pose serious health problems for residents of the Canary Islands. 


Representatives of the College of Physicians said that they were championing the fight against alternative therapies, which is problem that affects the Canary Islands, which has led to the death of patients.

Elena Campos, President of the national association that fights against what she calls pseudoscience, such as acupuncture, reiki and homeopathy that are some examples.

Campos also said, “In the case of oncological patients, opting for a pseudoscience therapy has increased the risk of dying by 400%. In the Canary Islands, it is an extremely serious and worrying public health problem, such as childhood obesity.”

It is reported that two million people in Spain substitute their medical treatment for another one without scientific evidence. It is estimated that more than 40% of the population has used them at some time, and some in health centres.

Within the framework of this intervention, the Medical Association of Las Palmas has welcomed scientific articles that have been published in medical journals for their importance of giving voice to the scientific community.
